Peter Heathcote joined the firm in 1985 and became a partner in 1989.
Peter has extensive experience in all aspects of patent and design work, including drafting of specifications, advice on validity and infringement, prosecution, conflict proceedings before the Patent Office, litigation and licensing. He is a member of the firm’s electrical and electronic engineering practice. Prior to joining Shelston IP, Peter worked for 12 years with the Australian Patent Office in a number of positions including Examiner of Patents, Director Australian Patent Information Service and Hearings Officer.
Peter’s areas of technical expertise include electronics, information technology, aerospace and communication systems. As a Hearings Officer in Canberra, he dealt with oppositions to patent applications in the electrical and electronic fields. He was also involved in the revision of Patent Office practice in respect of patent applications dealing with computer related inventions and computer software.
Peter also has extensive experience in water technology, in particular waste water treatment and purification. Much of his current work relates to communications systems, billing systems for telephony networks and fibre optic technologies used in communications.
For many years, Peter has enjoyed an active interest in tennis.
