Stuart Smith is currently the Managing Partner of Shelston IP. He has been with the firm since 1988 and a partner since 1994.
Stuart works primarily in the areas of patents and designs, including drafting of specifications, advice on validity and infringement, prosecution, conflict proceedings before the Patent Office, IP audits and due diligence analysis, as well as intellectual property aspects of litigation and licensing. He is also actively involved in the strategic dimensions of IP portfolio management and commercialisation for several of the firm's larger clients.
Stuart’s areas of technical expertise include mechanical, aeronautical, mining and automotive engineering, building construction, minerals processing, composite materials technology and medical devices. His undergraduate engineering thesis focused on metal alloys, and in particular the effect of the addition of boron and molybdenum on the high temperature creep properties of sintered steels.
Stuart enjoys studying philosophy and riding motorcycles. He is also a keen cyclist.
