Jacinta Flattery-O’Brien joined Shelston IP in 1998 and became a partner in 2004.
Jacinta specialises in patent matters relating to molecular biology, pharmaceuticals, health care products, food science and agricultural technology. She advises local and overseas clients on the full range of patent issues, including drafting and prosecution of patent applications, extension of patent term requests, infringement opinions, right-to-market searches, opposition and due diligence matters.
Jacinta is a molecular biologist with several years’ research experience. She graduated from the University of New South Wales, Sydney in 1992 with an honours degree in biochemistry and the University Medal for outstanding academic achievement. Her PhD studies involved the use of microbial organisms as biochemical and genetic models to identify factors involved in the response to oxidative stress. As a postdoctoral fellow in the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in Sydney, her work involved the use of genetic engineering to obtain transgenic mice for assessment of antihypertensive drug action.
Jacinta has lectured on the Commercial Biotechnology course at the University of New South Wales, Sydney since 2000. She has been lecturing at the Macquarie Institute of Innovation (Macquarie University) since 2006 and was appointed Associate Professor (Adjunct) in January 2007. She is also a past committee member of the New South Wales branch of AusBiotech.
In her spare time, Jacinta keeps fit by running around after her two small children and enjoys reading, music, theatre, tennis and swimming.
