幹細胞は、体の成長初期、多くの異なる細胞型に増殖する驚くべき可能性を秘めています。また、多くの組織において、ヒトや動物がまだ生きている限り、本質的に別の細胞に制限なく分化し内部修復システムのように機能します。幹細胞は分化すると、それぞれの新しい細胞は同じ幹細胞となるか、または、例えば、筋肉細胞、赤血球細胞、もしくは脳細胞などのより特殊な機能を有する別の細胞になります。このユニークな再生能力により、幹細胞は、糖尿病、心臓疾患等の治療に再生医療という新しい可能性を与えています。

Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth. In addition, in many tissues they serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.  Given their unique regenerative abilities, stem cells offer new potentials for treating diseases such as diabetes, and heart disease.
