  • Gareth is an Australian and New Zealand patent attorney specialising in chemical, pharmaceutical and materials-related technologies by way of drafting and prosecuting patent applications, conducting opposition proceedings and providing validity and infringement advice.  Gareth also manages the Australasian patent portfolios of multinational clients and works closely with universities and their spin-out enterprises.

From a technical standpoint, Gareth has a PhD and several peer-reviewed publications in the field of organic chemistry. He has particular expertise in synthetic methodologies, pharmaceuticals and polymers for biomedical applications.

Gareth also has an undergraduate major in materials science, with a greentech focus on nanoscale materials for environmental remediation. Gareth’s broad technical experience also enables him to practise effectively in subject matter including chemical engineering, metallurgy/mining, minerals processing, food technology and HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and insulation).

Prior to joining Shelston IP in 2003, Gareth became foundation-level qualified as a UK patent attorney – and has recently studied Chinese patent law. He has developed a thorough knowledge of the New Zealand patent system and is a regular contributor to various IP-related publications.

Gareth is a past winner of the Intellectual Property Society (IPSANZ) prize; his paper, “The ANZAC patent – a bridge too far?” was a forerunner to current harmonisation initiatives between the IP systems of Australia and New Zealand – a market focus that Gareth remains especially keen to develop for the benefit of our clients. Gareth is passionate about client service. Feedback in this regard has regularly highlighted his responsiveness, objectivity and humility – but most importantly, his ability to get results on time and on budget.
