  • Serena is a European qualified patent attorney, a UK patent attorney and a Registered patent attorney in Australia and New Zealand.

    Serena holds a Master of Chemistry degree and DPhil in Organic Chemistry both from the University of Oxford (UK). To obtain her DPhil, Serena researched the biomimetic synthesis of natural products via cascades of pericyclic reactions. Having secured sponsorship from a large pharmaceutical company, she spent time carrying out her research both in university labs and in an industry setting.  Before beginning her DPhil, Serena also spent a summer vacation working at the company as part of a team on the hit-to-lead phase of a project seeking to identify new serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).

    Serena’s patent work has encompassed inventions in the fields of pharmaceuticals, healthcare products, polymers, catalysts, food additives, petrochemicals, agrochemicals and mechanical devices.

    Serena has prosecuted applications in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and worldwide.  She is experienced at drafting patent applications and handling European and Australian opposition work.  Serena has also advised clients on infringement and validity issues and been involved with the strategic management of patent portfolios.  As well as acting for multinational corporations, her clients have included small start-up and medium sized companies as well as overseas attorneys.

    From an Australian perspective, her prior experience in Europe is particularly helpful because, as well as providing an international viewpoint, it can assist local Australian clients more effectively secure better patent protection in Europe.

    Before moving to Australia in 2013, Serena worked for a firm of patent attorneys in London.
